Casey Anthony was sentenced today for 4 consecutive 1 year sentences plus $4000 in fines and payment for prosecution costs!  If she does not appeal she could possibly by released sometime this year due to time served, good behavior and other credits.  People around the world are watching with fascination to see what Casey Anthony will do when she is released from jail.  Reports indicate books, movie deals, and payment for interviews.

Questions of those following the trial are asking “is Casey a psychopathic child murderer?”  Casey’s defense claimed she is an innocent victim of childhood abuse and her partying was a way to disassociate from the past abuse and family dysfunction.  The reason we are all so intrigued and experiencing extreme feelings about Casey and her family is because of such reported “unbelievable” and “abnormal” behaviors!  Casey’s partying right after Caylee’s death, check fraud, lies to her family, and the police and other behaviors that are not consistent with someone grieving the loss of their child.

casey anthony cindy george sentencing what is next for casey she a antisocial personality disorder counseling orlandoRegardless of what decisions Casey and her family make going forward, there is no doubt they all would benefit from counseling to vent intense feelings about the case, media and public threats!  Casey’s lying is one of the most disturbing behaviors.  People are shocked and confused at how often Casey has lied.  Her lying is reason enough to seek counseling, as “Trust” is the glue in relationships.  If Casey continues to lie to her social supports (family, friends, etc) and is not able to learn the consequences of her lying from this case then she will have difficulty building trust and having healthy relationships.

There are also several other reasons she needs help.

5 Reasons Casey Needs Counseling:

  1. The media’s display of Casey’s behavior would  be consistent with a personality disorder
  2. To address her reported childhood sexual abuse
  3. Traumas including the death of a child and being tried for murder
  4. Her family displays dysfunctional behavior
  5. Outbursts of irrational anger

4 Questions about Casey Anthony!

casey anthony party after caylee missing died murdered sentencing whats next for her book deals movie orlando counselingIs Casey a Pathological Liar or Antisocial Personality Disorder? Other’s who exhibit similar lying behaviors similar to what’s been reported by the media would typically be diagnosed as Antisocial Personality Disorder rather than a pathological liar.  A pathological liar will lie for seemingly no sensible reason.  Lying is a habit for them.  However, if a person who displays antisocial behavior is telling lies, they are for a specific purpose that benefits them with little regard to the harm it may cause the person receiving the lie.

Is Casey Anthony a Psychopath? Generally we refer to people being “psychopathic” because they seem to have an abnormal lack of empathy toward other people.  This speaks more to a person’s character than their behavior.  A mental health assessment would determine the existence of the exact mental illness Casey may or may not have, but other’s that have displayed behaviors similar to Casey Anthony would indicate Antisocial Personality Disorder.  If Casey were diagnosed a psychopath, then the attention from the media and the impression that she “got away with murder” would give a psychopath a strong feeling of invincibility.  This feeling of invincibility most likely would continue in harmful psychopathic behaviors without any concern of how it affects those around them.

According to the American Psychiatric Association DSM-IV, A person diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder will meet the following criteria:

There is a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since age 15 years, as indicated by three (or more) of the following:

(1)  Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest.

(2)  Deceitfulness, as indicated by repeated lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure

(3)  Impulsivity or failure to plan ahead

(4)  Irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults

(5)  Reckless disregard for safety of self or others

(6)  Consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations

(7)  Lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another.

  1. The individual is at least 18 years of age.
  2. There is evidence of Conduct Disorder with onset before 15 years old.
  3. The occurrence of antisocial behavior is not exclusively during the course of Schizophrenia or a Manic Episode.

casey anthony cindy george family dysfunction what can they do counseling orlandoWhat is wrong with her family? Is Cindy a pathological liar?  Did George Anthony sexually abuse Casey and have a marital affair?  Did her brother, Lee sexually abuse Casey?  Was Lee emotionally abused by George and Cindy?  Did George participate in the cover-up of the death of Caylee?  Will we ever know how Caylee died? These are all questions that have been raised by the defense during Casey’s murder trial.  Whether we believe these accusations or not, the truth is that they seemed to have been effective in raising questions in the jury’s mind about the level of dysfunction that goes on within the dynamics of this family.

Is there any hope for this family? Yes, both Casey and her family can address each of their issues individually and as a family system in counseling which can lead to growth and changes in their behavior and relationships.  The complexity and presence of multiple issues will require intensive and long term counseling. Casey and her family must be invested in the process in order for positive outcomes to result from counseling.  The disheartening fact is that if Casey and her family do not seek counseling, their abnormal behaviors and emotional stress may continue to increase and possibly result in future harm to themselves as well as others.
