Professional Experience

Isabel is a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and Licensed Professional Counselor Intern with Total Life Counseling. She has a Bachelor of Art in Spanish for International Service with minors in Latin America and Latino Studies and Theology and Religious Studies and she earned her Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the CACREP-accredited program at the University of North Texas. She has worked in a counselor role both at the Counseling and Human Development Center on UNT’s campus and at the Irving Family Advocacy Center, engaging in individual, group, and family counseling in English and Spanish with clients of all life stages.

Isabel’s previous work experience includes three and a half years as Project Coordinator with a nonprofit called First3Years, whose mission is to advance the healthy social-emotional development of children birth to age three. She has also interned with Catholic Charities of Dallas at their bilingual (English-Spanish) preschool program and with the Latin American Youth Center in Washington, DC.

Special Interests and Experience

Being multi-racial and multi-cultural herself, Isabel enjoys working with clients who identify with minority cultural groups or are experiencing acculturation issues. She has experience working with adolescents facing a range of challenges, from developmental concerns to severe trauma. She has also seen college students and young adults, who navigate the stress of difficult transitions and school and work life. The adults and families Isabel has worked with come looking to address a variety of concerns, including:

  • Mild to severe mental health disorders
  • Trauma
  • Trouble with identity development
  • Disequilibrium
  • Challenging life changes
  • Self-esteem problems
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Self-harm
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Struggles with acculturation
  • Grief
  • Depression and/or anxiety

  • Domestic violence

Moreover, Isabel has training and special interest in the following:

  • Depression/anxiety treatment
  • Animal-assisted therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Working with people from minority cultures

Volunteer Experience

Isabel has had the life-changing opportunity to go on service trips to Mexico, Chile, and Peru to help those living in poverty. Through these experiences, she developed a passion for helping those in need. This started her on a path to a career where she could serve others daily. She realizes that forming relationship and meaningful connection with others is paramount to holistic health and wellbeing, and for some, the therapeutic relationship is exactly what they need to achieve their goals.

Counseling Theory

Isabel works from an Adlerian theoretical orientation, with a focus on helping clients to address concerns with social relationships and their sense of belonging in their world. She believes that every person is the expert on their own life, and that they have the power within them to achieve positive change, growth, and healing. Isabel approaches counseling both with a humanistic and a cognitive style, using empathy, reflection, redirection, and evidence-based techniques in her practice.
