At TLC we treat pornography addiction for adults currently in Metro West Orlando, Avalon Park and Clermont.

With the internet readily available on our phones, tablets and computers, pornography is free and able to be viewed anytime. In fact, porn is not only available but is now consumed at an alarming rate. Today over 30% of all data transferred across the web is porn related. Each month porn sites receive more regular traffic than Amazon, Netflix and Twitter combined. Currently, three of the top 10 most heavily trafficked websites in the United States are adult websites.

A Discussion on Pornography

Is watching porn really a problem?

Our culture is constantly pushing boundaries and reclassifying what was once seen as shocking to be viewed later as acceptable and normal. The discussion of pornography and its effects resurfaces from time to time, whether in a new journal article or perhaps a celebrity discussing pornography use. These new discussions and studies can help us better understand how pornography affects society today.

Let’s take a look at some research on the use of pornography:

  • A University of Oklahoma study revealed that pornography use within a marriage nearly doubles the couple’s likelihood for divorce
  • Repeated exposure to pornography can lead to sexual dysfunction (difficulty becoming sexually aroused, maintaining sexual arousal and developing a conditioned preference to pornographic novelty)
  • Over 55 studies have identified a link between pornography use and reduced sexual and relationship satisfaction
  • Pornography users have reported a poorer quality of life and higher levels of depressive symptoms than non-pornography users in studies on pornography use and mental health
  • Exposure to pornography at a young age harms developing brains and is linked to high-risk behaviors when the exposure occurs between ages 9 and 13

How do know if using porn is a problem in my life?

  • Time spent watching porn starts taking precedence over hobbies, responsibilities and relationships
  • Considerable time is spent thinking about and planning to use pornography
  • You work to hide your use from others, lie about your use and frequently delete your internet browsing history
  • Your use of pornography feels like it is out of control.  You may try to stop but are unsuccessful in stopping usage altogether
  • Pornography has lead to negative consequences in your professional life.  Your use may negatively impact your job performance or academics
  • Pornography has lead to negative consequences in your personal life.  Your intimate relationships suffer and emotional distance is created between you and your spouse/significant other

I have identified porn as a problem in my life. Now what should I do?

There are several steps you can take in order to change your behavior and stop pornography use altogether.  Here are a few steps you can take to get started:

  • Make a list of all the positive and negative consequences of quitting pornography use.  How will this change impact your life?
  • Identify vulnerable times, adjust routines and change environments which lead to pornography usage
  • Set up porn-blocking software on computers and other devices
  • Speak with a counselor in order to help identify underlying causes for your behavior.  Learn new coping strategies for feelings of anxiety, anger, depression, loneliness and boredom
  • Identify new activities which can take the place of your old, undesired activities
  • Establish personal values and distinguish healthy sexual behaviors from unhealthy ones
  • Extend grace and compassion to yourself.  Any lasting change takes time and effort!
