After the Tragedy: PTSD as the Result of Mass Shootings

By Published On: October 5th, 20172.3 min read

The recent mass shooting in Las Vegas, which left at least 59 dead and over 500 more injured, has been confirmed as the deadliest in modern U.S. history.

Sadly, gun violence is a pressing issue in the U.S. According to Gun Violence Archive, there have been 274 mass shootings in the U.S. during 2017 so far, with 11,763 overall deaths from general gun violence.

These tragedies take lives, break families and cause us to question everything. They also leave behind a trail of surviving victims. The survivors of mass shootings and other disturbing events can suffer from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a mental health condition caused by living through or witnessing a troubling and/or violent event. The violence, death and destruction that they experience can stay with them long after the event. Those who suffer from PTSD and do not seek treatment can face severe lasting psychological and physiological implications.

Some of the effects of PTSD include:

  • Reliving the traumatic event over and over. It is normal to spend time thinking about a disturbing event you have experienced but those who suffer from PTSD are constantly brought back to whatever caused them trauma. They may also find themselves experiencing nightmares and vivid flashbacks.
  • Heightened levels of arousal. Those suffering from PTSD may find that their reactions are more extreme. Increased anger, irritability and anxiety are all common.
  • It’s not surprising that those who experience a traumatic event would avoid the people, places and things they associate with their distress. Victims of a workplace shooting could be psychologically unprepared to return to their jobs, and survivors of car accidents may be unable to get back on the road. However, it’s important to recognize that those who retreat from the outside world can find themselves feeling even more isolated and alone.
  • Loss of joy and feelings of guilt. No longer finding enjoyment in the things that used to make you happy. Feeling guilty that you survived and others didn’t. These symptoms are not unusual but can seem overwhelming, with no light at the end of the tunnel.

As with any mental health condition, it is important to spot the warning signs of PTSD early and pursue adequate treatment. Find a mental health expert you trust and gather information on medications that may reduce symptoms. With some time, patience, support and professional help, it is possible to reclaim your life after trauma.
