7 Signs of High Functioning Depression and Suicide | Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain | Depression Counselor

So many are shocked by the suicides of two known celebrities. First was designer Kate Spade, and only one day after was the suicide of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain. A suicide itself is a devastating act, and a famous person committing suicide not only brings a lot of attention to the subject of suicide, but also causes a lot of questioning from the media and public as to why it happened. Suicide is often associated with depression, and the glamour world of the Hollywood lights, gorgeous dresses, red carpet events, and facades of the “picture perfect life” often does not reflect the true reality of each individual or their real innermost feelings.

When talking about suicide, it is important to mention that the act is not only a result of outwardly depressed people. Victims of suicide are not always the ones who are in a “dark room,” isolated from society, or have a negative mood. High functioning depression is relevant when talking about suicide. It is difficult to notice high functioning depression, because the individual is still able to keep a routine with work, family, friends and activities. High functioning depression is not a diagnosis.  In the Diagnostic Statistical Manual for Mental Health Disorders, we can find a category of depression known as Dysthymia, which is a functioning depression. Dysthymia has similar and different features from the depression.  The individual fair and somewhat consistent functioning is what makes it difficult for people to notice that the individual is depressed, and sometimes the individual can not perceive their own dysthymic symptoms.

Below are 7 signs of high functioning depression:

  1. Frequent tiredness – The individual will often experience lack of energy and exhaustion.
  2. Avoiding social situations – Even though an individual with high functioning depression can keep up with a routine, he/she will frequently try to disengage socially or withdraw as much as they can from social situations.
  3. Extra Irritability –  Little patience and tolerance. The individual gets easily annoyed and is aggressive.
  4. Inability to focus – It can be extremely frustrating for the individual because they cannot concentrate properly and often need to repeat the same tasks over and over again.
  5. Use of alcohol or medicine – The individual will often use poor coping skills such as consuming alcohol and self-medicating to deal with stress from their routine.
  6. Over eating/over exercising – These are two ways people try to cope with stress.  High functioning depressive people will utilize these as escapes.
  7. Difficulty in falling asleep –  Due to excessive worry or irrational fears, the high functioning individuals’ brain becomes hyperactive which makes it more challenging for the body to relax. Lack of sleep can lead to anxiety, nervousness and irritability.

People with high functioning depression also experience intrusive negative thoughts that can lead to suicide attempts or death. The negative pattern developed by the individual’s unhealthy thoughts will build a “web” of dysfunctional cycles of thoughts that increases sense of hopelessness and helplessness. Therefore it is important to be aware of how our mind and body are functioning, and to notice any signs of depression. Take a mindful look at your feelings, thought patterns and behavior, and if you find yourself with depressive symptoms, do not hesitate to look for help.
