Can’t resist that extra portion? Have to go through that drive through? Have to eat dessert, or maybe two?
Now that the holidays are behind us, many will turn their focus to improving health and shedding unwanted pounds. The average American gains SEVEN pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. How can you tell the difference between some simple comfort food indulgence and the more serious problem of over-eating? Some symptoms to watch for:
*Eating because of emotions like sadness, boredom, loneliness, depression
*Eating instead of engaging in relationships
*Consuming a whole bag of chips, whole container of ice cream, or multiple fast food meals in one day
*The over-eating is a source of guilt and shame
*Feeling out of control
What can you do? Address the issues causing you to turn to food. It may be painful at first, but tackling the depression, loneliness, or anger head-on will help you create a more positive and fulfilling life. You do not need to be a slave to over eating – there is help and hope. The coping techniques you learn while confronting your issues can help you build a fruitful and positive life. Also important is building healthy relationships with others.
