Back To School during COVID-19 | Counselor Tips

By Published On: August 27th, 20211.7 min read

Going back to school has always been a stressful time. School supply shopping, school clothes, class schedules, getting your child back onto a school schedule, bus times, etc..But things have become an entirely new level of stress because of Covid-19. Dealing with social distancing, mask regulations, and everyone’s fear and stress. Some are dealing with virtual classes which is a new world for a lot of people, teachers, students, and parents. So with all this said, you’re probably asking yourself what can you do to help prepare your child and help guide them through these difficult times.

  1. Make a plan
  2. Be patient/understanding
  3. Ask others for advice and tips
  4. Join groups
  5. Let your child vent out their frustrations

Ensure your child that their safety is first and foremost so even if others aren’t following social distancing rules, make sure they know how important it is to stay safe. Make sure they have extra masks or even face shields. Give them the supplies they need (hand sanitizer, wipes, gloves).

You may need to schedule some extra time during homework, just that they have time to vent their frustrations. There may be extra distractions or struggles in the classroom, especially with virtual learning. So be patient if they struggle a bit more with whatever curriculum they’re going over at the time. Try your best to be involved with communication with the teaching staff, they may need your help as well.

Social distancing and distance learning is not something we’re going through alone. It may be difficult to feel that way, but try to reach out to others and see what they’re doing to cope with these difficult times. You may be able to work together to make things a bit easier.
