4 Simple Ways to Form Better Attachments with Your Children | Counselor

By Published On: May 11th, 20231.4 min read

Attachment is vital to a child and the caregiver’s responsiveness to the child is paramount to securing that attachment. Attachment issues are very prevalent in our society today and can play out in a variety of ways. Things such as the fear of commitment, of being alone, trying to be loved, rebellion, and feeling inferior all play a part in attachment. Many different disorders can arise not only in children but also in adults, which in turn will play out in their relationships. Disorders such as reactive attachment, separation anxiety, learning, communication, and even elimination problems all account for poor attachment. Physical symptoms involving the cardiovascular, intestinal, respiratory, and gastrointestinal systems can also interfere with daily life.

So what do we do? There are a few simple tips that can help re-establish attachment with your child.

  • Smiling – A shared emotional exchange; It’s a great way to show non-verbally how you feel inside, thus demonstrating to them that you want to connect with them.
  • Physical Touch and Hugging – promotes physical and psychological functioning, reduces stress, relieves pain, and increases the ability to cope.
  • Playing – Attachment to people and playthings can help children feel loved and comfortable bonding with others. Positive attachments play an enormous part in developing the security a young child needs.
  • Eye Contact – The simple use of eye contact can make the child feel valued and loved, reflecting that they are important to you

Doing these simple steps will foster a more secure attachment between you and your children.
