Missing deadlines, disorganization, and losing focus can be frustrating, especially within your career. ADHD is largely misdiagnosed throughout adulthood. Dealing with ADHD at work can be hard for anyone, but the key to succeeding is to adapt your habits in the workplace to your advantage. Although ADHD symptoms vary with each individual, below are some common challenges that adults with ADHD deal with daily – and how to manage your work effectively so that you can thrive in the workplace.

Forgetting deadlines

Getting work done on time when given a deadline is crucial. ADHD might make this more difficult. Setting reminders and having a personal or work calendar that you can customize to your schedule can be beneficial. Some deadlines might even need an alarm, which can help you remember scheduled events that may have slipped your mind. Coming up with a work plan at the beginning of each week can help you stay organized, remember important deadlines, and complete your work on time.

Misplacing items

Not knowing where you put something can make your job even harder. Color-code items, files, and information so that you know where things are at all times with a simple glance. Not only does this help alleviate work stress, but it also may help you feel a little more in control. Organize your work area and make sure important items are visible to you.

Lengthy materials

When given a large amount of material, make annotations as you read. Those with ADHD might have trouble retaining the important parts of the material and may get lost in the words. Highlight key points and discuss what you read with colleagues. This can help give you another perspective and help you understand the material even better. Setting small goals such as taking notes on the material can help you fully understand it.

Losing focus

Losing focus can mean the difference between success and failure. Request a quiet location away from the noise and office traffic or distractions that may sway you off track. Prioritize your tasks. Making lists can help you stay focused on one thing at a time and reduce confusion. Take short breaks to keep a fresh mind and keep up your pace.

Following instructions

Listening to and understanding instructions can be more difficult than one would think. Sometimes things get lost in translation or miscommunication, and requesting precise instructions can help your projects reach their full potential. Ask a few coworkers for their feedback on how they would complete the task you were given if there is any confusion.

Overcoming these difficulties

Discover what tasks give you the most difficulty. By identifying what troubles you, you can find solutions that will help you long-term. Self-accommodating and figuring out what works for you can give you the confidence you need to succeed, even if you have to do things a little differently.
